Dr. McCarthy has been in private medical practice in the Northern Virginia area since 1976. He received a BS (Magna cum laude) at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He received a M.D. in family practice degree at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He served his internship and residency in Family Practice at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals in Madison, Wisconsin. He practiced family medicine for thirty years in the Northern Virginia area, and was repeatedly named in the Washington Consumer Checkbook as one of the area's top family phsicians.
He has served as the Chief of Staff and board member at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, Virginia. He founded and served as director of the nationally recognized Continuing Medical Education program at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, Virginia for twenty years. Dr. McCarthy has also served as a board member of the Northern Virginia Foundation for Health and Medical Care and on the board of Physician’s Care insurance. He served as the team physician for the Prince William professional baseball team for twenty years, chosen by the Pirates, Yankees, Cardinals, and White Sox.
For the last six years Dr McCarthy's enire focus has been weight loss and metaboic diseases due to excess weight. He has extensive post-graduate education in weight loss medicine, nutrition, metabolism, weight-related disease and lifestyle medicine in addition to his thirty years experience practicing general medicine. He was among the first 350 physicians in the U.S. to become certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine http://www.abbmcertification.org/ (formerly American Board of Bariatric Medicine)
Dr McCarthy currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (www.asbp.org). He is nationally recognized for his expertise in the field of weight loss medicine and is a frequent speaker on various topics of obesity medicine at local, regional and national medical educational events.
